The Real Vigàta and Montelusa Behind Camilleri’s Novels

Vigàta and Montelusa do not appear on any map, yet their streets, squares and horizons are unmistakably real. This Montalbano Literary Tour in Sicily follows the trail of Salvo Montalbano through the landscapes that inspired Andrea Camilleri: Porto Empedocle, Agrigento, the sea, the hills, the suburbs and the small‑town atmospheres that became the stage for his novels.

In Camilleri’s books, Vigàta and Montelusa are semi‑imaginary places whose borders shift according to the needs of the story. Yet they are also deeply rooted in a real geography: Porto Empedocle becomes Vigàta with its harbour, abandoned factories, lighthouse, flat rock, Salita Granet, Marinella beach and the “Commissariato” on a familiar street. Agrigento becomes Montelusa, with its Questura and the old Rabato district.

From Montelusa to Vigàta

The tour begins in the city centre of Montelusa (Agrigento), where we find the Commissioner’s Office (Questura) and Piazza San Francesco, the place where the very idea of Vigàta first came to Camilleri’s mind. We walk along Via Atenea to the Santo Spirito Library, where Montalbano finds the book that helps him understand the mystery of The Terracotta Dog.

From there, we transfer to Villaseta (The Snack Thief) and continue towards Vigàta, passing by the Pasture and the industrial outskirts that echo Camilleri’s descriptions.

In Porto Empedocle–Vigàta we stop at the Tower of Charles V, described in Camilleri’s first book, and at the pier to admire the sight of Vigàta from the sea. Later, we walk in the town centre to Salita Granet and Caffè Vigata, with references to various works set there: The Shape of Water, The Scent of the Night, The Terracotta Dog, The Excursion to Tindari, The Voice of the Violin.

There is time to simply inhabit the small‑town atmosphere that surrounds Montalbano and his colleagues before continuing to Marinella (Montalbano’s house area) and, if requested, to Scala dei Turchi.
